Lookout Netflix, Amazon Prime Builds Roster With Viacoms ‘Jersey Shore’

Amazon Prime Viacom Deal

Amazon announced Wednesday that they will be teaming up with Viacom, who controls major cable channels like Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV and VH1, for it’s Amazon Prime streaming services. This means there is programming for the whole family with hours of streaming from the likes of “Jersey Shore” and “Chappelle’s Show” and “Dora the Explorer” for the kids.

Amazon said this brings the tally to 15,000 shows available on Amazon Prime.

For those of you still scrolling through Netflix’ ‘new releases’ selections, wondering how you forgot there were so many classic Harrison Ford movies, this news may make you consider the switch. Netflix still has the biggest library but Amazon is moving in quickly.

Netflix CEO Reed Hasting still doesn’t consider Amazon a threat explaining to his investors in a letter last month: “Both Amazon and Hulu Plus’s content is a fraction of our content. We believe their respective total viewing hours are each less than 10 percent of ours.”

Brad Beale, director of video content acquisition for Amazon, is excited about the deal and the forward motion of their service saying, “over the last year we have received fantastic customer feedback about Prime Instant Video. We are constantly working to improve the service by adding the shows that our customers enjoy the most. This deal with Viacom brings Prime customers and Kindle Fire users thousands of comedies, kids’ shows, reality TV and much more from some of the best cable networks available.”

The new Amazon Prime additions will be ready for streaming on more than 300 devices, including the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet. Amazon Prime streaming service is $79 / year compared to Netflix’ $8 / month ($96 / year).
