You have to love it when environmentally friendly meets practical and that’s exactly what’s happened with the new release of Novothink’s latest creation, the Surge. While it’s just out and we haven’t had a chance to get our hot, little hands on it to test yet, the Surge looks good and sounds like something that would see use in our households on a daily basis.

The Novothink Surge is the first Apple-certified solar iPhone charger case to hit the market. This handy little item will extend 3G talk time by four hours and audio playback by 20 hours simply by keeping it exposed to sunlight. It has an integrated lithium-ion battery that stores excess energy as well and a LED display to keep you informed on the device’s status.

The Surge is now on the market and costs $79.95 for the iPhone model and $69.95 for the iPod Touch version.

The new Xeros washing machine cleans clothes with only 10% of the water need from a regular washing machine and could reduce household bills by 30%.

The key to the nearly waterless washing machine is tiny, nylon beads that help eliminate stains with a minimum of liquid. The 3mm-long beads are capable of being used for hundreds of cycles.

The washing machine pours the beads into the washing drum when the clothes have been slightly moistened. They are small enough to get into every crevice and remove dirt and stains. Then when the cycle is done the tiny beads are drained out just like water would.

The Xeros waterless machine could hit the market as soon as 2011. No price has been set yet.

A 1988 Volkswagon Scirocco has been converted to a lean, mean, coffee guzzling machine, consuming a kilo of java every three miles and able to reach speeds of up to 60 mph.

The Carpuccino is the brainchild of the people behind the BBC science show Bang Goes The Theory.

Nick Watson, the show’s producer, said, “Coffee, like wood or coal, has some carbon content so you can use it as a fuel. The coffee needs to be very dry and in pellets to allow the air to move through the pile of coffee as it burns. The brand doesn’t matter.”

The Carpuccino will be on display at the upcoming Big Bang Science Fair in Manchester.

The Greener Gadgets Design Competition, hosted by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), handed out its winners for most innovative designs last Thursday.

Ten finalists were selected out of the hundreds of designers that applied with first place going to AUG/Living Goods Program. This concept is a smart phone app that scans bar codes of produce and gives the user relevant sustainability data on the item like how far away the food has traveled to get to you, if it’s in season locally as well as other data.

Judges lauded the app design for being both practical and mobile, a rarity in most other entries this year.
