As with the iPhone, the iPad battery will only be replaceable by Apple. Purchasers will have to send the entire device in for the replacement to be done at a cost of $99. Throw on the shipping charge and you’re looking at $105.95 each time you need a new battery.

An important thing to remember, should you find yourself with an iPad that no longer holds its charge, is that Apple doesn’t just replace the battery, but the whole iPad. So be sure to sync everything with your computer before you send it in or you’ll lose anything not on your computer.

The Apple iPad is hitting store shelves on April 3 although if you’re super keen on first generation tech, you can preorder yours today.

Despite a modest growing concern on the environmental impact of technology, gadgets don’t seem to be getting green enough, fast enough.

According to a recent report from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) the issue of unrecycled electronics is getting worse and with a massive increase in the amount of electronic gadgets expected to be sold in the Africa, South America, China and India over the next decade, things are about to get infinitely worse.

Based on information obtained on 11 different developing nations, the following scenarios are expected to occur by 2020:

• South African, Chinese, and Indian electronic waste will increase over 2007 levels by 200, 400 and 500% respectively.

• The number of cell phones expected to hit landfills in China will multiply by 18 times.

• On a global scale, the amount of electronic waste is increasing each year by approximately 40 million tons.

If a study has ever given more cause to buy greener gadgets and to recycle electronics, I haven’t seen it.

While going green has a lot of momentum in various industries, what ultimately really matters for long-term change toward increased sustainability is where the money goes. If buying power demands green technology and green gadgets, that’s what we will see and at a much reduced price.

Sadly, a recent survey from Retrevo showed that consumers are still not very influenced by environmental factors when iu comes to their tech and gadget purchases.

When participants were asked whether they felt guilty when they bought an environmentally unfriendly gadget – 42% said ‘No.’ While 10% said ‘yes’ but that they usually strove to buy the greenest gadgets and another 16% never felt guilty because they always bought based on environmental factors.

The rest of the survey broke down into in between responses like 16% who said they carded but still only bought the gadget they liked the most and another 16% who said they felt no guilt because it all came down to price.

Britain has beein airing some advertisements that depict a father telling a daughter a bedtime story about how humans have been destroying the planet. At the end of the story, the child asks, “Is there a happy ending?” The narrator then declares it’s up to us to determine how the story will end. The commercial is indeed grim, but draws awareness to the critical threshhold our world is standing on. We are tetering on the edge of disaster. If we curb our Co2 consumption now, we have a chance.

People however, are not happy with the commerical and the Advertising Standards Association spokesman says nearly 1,000 complaints about the ads have been received. Check out the commercial for yourself and let us know what you think!

The advanced, efficient and energy-saving AT&T Zero Charger apparently outperforms other chargers by automatically completely powering down when not being used. “Vampire draw” is 100% gone from the power equation. What is “vampire draw?” Conventional chargers left plugged in – even when not actively charging – can vampire draw as much as 5x to 20x more energy than stored in the battery.
The ZERO will stop pulling power and eliminate power waste but you don’t have to do anything - the charger does everything on its own.

An as an added bonus, USB compatibility makes the Zero Charger a convenient charging station for many mobile devices. The ZERO charger will be available in May 2010.

If you’re planning on wearing a safari vest, why not got the distance and get the Solar Vest from Chinavision. No, wer’re not selling it, but we have to admit, this thing is very cool.

The Solar Vest features a set of four built in solar panels sewn into the back which recharge a battery pack stored in the left pocket. This battery is then capable of recharging other devices using outputs of 5V, 6V, 9V or 12-20V. This will allow to recharge everything from an iPhone to a laptop computer.

So when you’re in the sun, you’ve got power for pretty much anything when you’re wearing the Solar Vest. Environmentally friendly and cheaper than we expected at $126.

There are a few notable issues with generic USB chargers. The computer needs to be on to charge, you need different chargers for various devices and you may need software on the computer to start charging.

With the CSQUID, there is CHARGE mode to allow you to charge even when the PC is in standby and also does not need software installed when the PC is on. A single cable with APPLE, MINIB and a MINI-to-MICRO adapter will charge almost all your devices. It also has a SYNC mode that allows you to transfer data without using another cable.

The CSQUID continues to charge the portable device through the computer even if the computer goes to standby thereby reducing the drain on the earths resources. In addition to standby charging, it can also charge when the PC is on and do data transfer. A single cable replaces several existing datasync/charge cables for Apple and Micro-USB devices. It does not need pre-installed synchronization software just to charge through USB.
